Best of 2009: #6 “If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone” by The Wooden Sky
December 21, 2009

I’ll keep this one short because it is one of the only albums on this list that I don’t own yet. It isn’t available in local record stores, online shipping is a killer, and when I saw The Wooden Sky play in Windsor earlier this year, the album (and its accompanying tour EP) wasn’t available for sale. So I don’t have much liner note data to work with aside from the songs that were sent as part of a digital promo copy.
A few years ago when the band was still called Friday Morning’s Regret, their album, “When Lost At Sea,” was near the top of my best of list. While some of the more electric guitar driven songs are gone, “If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone” is everything I could want from a follow-up. Much like Deastro below, this release would probably be higher on the list if there were some bigger stylistic surprises, but at the same time, there’s nothing to complain about here. All the songs are perfect and hold up to repeat listens, and I’m still hearing new sounds in the mix. If you like modern alternative, country/folk-inspired music, check out The Wooden Sky.
